Under the existing legislation tourist establishments are distinguished between “Luxury”, “A”, “B”,  and “C” class as opposed to the 1 to 5 stars classification of hotels. As a result we have:

-Five denominations of Hotels (1 to 5 stars)

-Four denominations oh Hotel Apartments and Tourist Villas (Luxury, A,B,C class)

-Two  denominations of Tourist Villages and Camping Sites (A and B class)

-Traditional Houses (Classified into hotels or hotel apartments)

-Tourist Apartments (formerly unlicensed establishments)

-Hotels without star and Guest Houses (the so-called “dying classes” entry into which is no longer allowed for new establishments).

The moves were revealed at the end of a workshop staged last week as part of efforts to promote the Year of Northern Cyprus to would –be visitors in Turkey.

The workshop, held at the Mercure Hotel in Kyrenia(Girne), debated issue such as the tourism potential of Northern Cyprus, its tourism targets, changing the perception of Northern Cyprus as a holiday destination in Turkey, and developing a northern Cyprus tourism brand.

Speakers included prominent Turkish Travel Agents’Union (Tursab) members Alper Mackan, Cetin Gurcun and  Mehmet Gucuyener ,  Cyprus Turkish Travel Agents’ Union (Kitsab) deputy chairman Andac  Gunay, treasurer Faiz Camgoz and member Ali Necati Ozkan.

Speaking afterwards, Prime Minister Irsen Kucuk said the TRNC had already started reaping the benefits of the tourism campaign in Turkey, and said similar promotions would be staged to target tourists elsewhere in Europe.

“Our quantum leaps in tourism will  not be limited to Turkey only, but will be spread to other targeted countries such as Germany, Italy and the UK,” he said.

Mr Kucuk said recent upheavals and disasters in other countries had created huge potential for the northern Cyprus tourism industry, and the Turkish Cypriots needed to work closely with Turkey to enable them to tap into” that potential.

He rejected suggestions that the frequent change in tourism minister meant insufficient importance was being attached to the role, and countered that the latest change-Unal Ustel in place of Kemal Durust- had been to ensure close collaboration with the industry by bringing in a minister from the Girne (Kyrenia) area.

He said the minister would now be assisted by the new consultancy committee, whose members comprised Eastern Mediterranean University Tourism Department dean professor Mehmet Altinay investor Reha Arar and young tourism entrepreneurs.

It said a Larnaca holiday can be purchased through On the Beach for `significantly less` than last year.

According to the firm, the price variation can be attributed to the availability of deals and the value of flights and hotel packages.

“This year holidays to Larnaca are projected to be on average 26% cheaper per person than 2010, Malta trips will be available for 24% less, while Bodrum rounds out the top three with a 15% decrease in price,” said On the Beach.

Alistair Daly, Marketing Director of On the Beach said Larnaca offered “incredibly good value for money”.

This is down to cheap air flights and the availability of budget hotels.

“Based upon our analysis Larnaca, Malta and Bodrum are superb bargains this year and we strongly recommend that people looking to save some money highlight these places for their coming summer trips.”
